It’s coming to the end of the ‘Planet Bowie’ season at the Filmhouse, which has showcased many of the Thin White Duke’s cinematic appearances – from The Man Who Fell to Earth in 1976 right through to The Prestige in 2006.

However, this week the Filmhouse will also be showing Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, a 1973 documentary from director D.A. Pennebacker. This film, shot at a concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in July 1973, depicts David Bowie’s final performance as his theatrical Ziggy Stardust persona. Footage of the concert, including favourites such as ‘Space Oddity’ and ‘Suffragette City’ as well as a cover of Lou Reed’s ‘White Light/White Heat’, is interspersed with limited backstage clips.

The concert was the final date of Bowie’s UK promotional tour for his ‘Aladdin Sane’ album, and many believed it would be his last ever performance. This, of course, wasn’t true. In the light of his most recent surprise offering, ‘The Next Day’, who knows if Bowie will tour again? Until that announcement is made (or not made), I recommend satisfying your cravings for a bit of live Bowie with Ziggy Stardust….
