Nanu Nanu Lost Articles: Best Moment of 2012

Best of 2012

For some very strange reason our year end list of the best moments of 2012 never got published. It may have been cursed from the beginning. Some believe it a conspiracy. Others say that the editor of the post forgot because it was Hogmanay. We may never know.

Do you remember 2012? Well we certainly do because all this exciting stuff happened in it. It may seem odd that we are publishing a list of stuff that happened in 2012 but remember the Oscars still haven’t happened and that’s the biggest year end list there is. Enjoy remembering things as we take you through some of our personal highlights of the year we call 2012.

Elyse

In November 2011, sitting in the library, I read that The Rolling Stones were back in the studio, rehearsing and thinking about putting on a few gigs for that small anniversary they had coming up. I decided in a split second that I would be going to one of those gigs, no matter what lengths I had to go to. Were they going to play Glastonbury? I would be there. Would it be in the USA? I would be there. Would I have an exam the following day? Regardless, I would be there.

I thus have three interlinked moments of 2012 which come together as one overwhelming, surreal package. Firstly, the moment in October when I received an email which announced the dates of four Rolling Stones gigs, two of which were in London and at convenient dates for me to attend. The second moment would have to be when I realised I had managed to get a ticket in my virtual basket during the concert presale and that I had secured what was effectively a very expensive form of golddust.

The third piece of this moment montage requires little explanation beyond this video:

(NB: I am not the screaming woman in this video. However, I was definitely a screaming woman, sitting somewhere nearby.)

The 7th November 2012: the day Glasgow Celtic beat the so called best team in the world, FC Barcelona. This moment would have been a whole lot better if I had actually been at Celtic Park to witness it along with the rest of my family. Instead, I was in the library essay writing. Tough life, eh? Still, I think the text I received from my mum after the game sums up the euphoria of all Celtic fans on that fateful November evening: ‘Omg, it was amazing. Gran cried 3 times. Lol!’ (Actual text from my mother.)

Seeing the Queen jump out of a helicopter for the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics has to be up there. I am not ashamed to say this, but Danny Boyle made me cry that night with his ceremony – and who couldn’t shed a tear when a deaf dumb and blind choir of children sung the national anthem? Or seeing nurses and actual patients of Great Ormond Street celebrating the NHS AND Children’s Literature Or having the inventor of the internet Tim Berners-lee send a tweet at the pinnacle of a ceremony that says – “you know what people of earth? We are fucking good at shit”. Even seeing Grime music given centre stage via Dizzee Rascal in front of literally billions of people – one of only a few features of East London that was actually celebrated. Actually the entire thing was pretty great – I don’t think £9 Billion is too much to pay for an Olympic venue full to brim booing members of parliament. Not in jest mind, in actual fully fledged hatred. Seeing private firm G4S get roundly screwed by their own ineptitude when a public entity could do it even better, and at a moment’s notice too was quite enjoyable. Somewhere there is my favourite memory of 2012, but given that everyone else on this page is likely to say something similar, regardless of how fantastic a job Boyle did (there are few people who can excite Huw Edwards and Trevor Nelson with the same spectacle) my favourite moment falls between man landing a rover on Mars, or Cern Scientists basically announcing

Chris Hoy
2012 has been a pretty big deal in the UK the Jubilee happened, NASA landed a Rover on Mars (@MarsCuriosity) and Felix Baumgartner floated to space and then jumped back down to earth. For me though I felt the best moment occurred during the Olympics. Olympic fever gripped even the worst cynic, I am not even particularly interested in people who sport, but something about it happening in this country and Britain doing so well made it compelling viewing. Everyone seemed to be hooked and as I was leaving work I realised that I was going to miss Chris Hoy’s final solo race. Walking up Lothian road I remembered the big screen in Festival square where I joined what appeared to be the entire staff of Clydesdale bank and the various other offices around the square to cheer on Sir Chris to his final Gold. I never thought I’d say this but cheering on an old Watsonian as he showed some cyclists a thing or two about cycling was my favourite moment this year.

Sam

I went to Copenhagen for a couple of days, that was pretty cool

Finlay

It is undeniable that the Olympics were pretty great. The opening ceremony was exceptional, it some how got those of us who were expecting to hate the whole thing on board. I can’t quite remember the last time I enjoyed sports as much as I did in summer 2012. Other moments of the year are personal to me. This year I helped organise a 24 hour long radio show which I hosted with Christian Illingworth all in the name of charity. We interviewed a bunch of guests; highlights being Michael Winslow, Frightened Rabbit and Diane Spencer. We also played a bunch of games on air and didn’t sleep for over a day. It was certainly a marathon trying to keep the momentum going but we managed it and in the end raised a whole bunch of money for Waverley Care. My other personal highlight has been relaunching Nanu Nanu. After chatting to a few people it became clear that relaunching Nanu Nanu was going to be viable and so it happened. It has been really rather fun.

Superbowl XLVII

Baltimore Ravens versus San Francisco 49ers

Tonight, THE BIGGEST GAME IN AMERICA sees the AFC champion Balitmore Ravens clash with the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. Whilst the Ravens are seeking their second franchise Superbowl victory, the Niners are searching for a record-tying sixth franchise superbowl win. Superbowl XLVII is rife with talking points and this preview will feature the two coaches, who are the first

COACHES

One of the prominent talking points this year is that Ravens coach John Harbaugh will be preparing to face, Niners coach, Jim Harbaugh, who, you guessed it, is his BROTHER. It”s an unlikely plot twist that has led to this Superbowl being dubbed the Harbaugh Bowl, the HarBowl, the SuperBaugh, and countless other tedious monikers that only America could create to prolong a fortnight of tireless coverage. Tawdry puns aside, this will undoubtedly be a huge aspect of tonight”s game, particularly when you consider that each Harbaugh can boast an impressive record as a head coach. They have, in fact, faced each other in the past with John”s Ravens getting the upper hand of his younger brother Jim”s Niners with victory in a “Thanksgiving Classic” game in 2011. The psychology of this face off is a rare occurrence in any sport and onlookers will be fascinated to see how it plays out tonight.

If any predictions were to be a lock tonight it”s that Jim Harbaugh will play the role of whiny younger brother with aplomb.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Baltimore:

Joe Flacco (Quarterback):
Joe Flacco
At the finale of his fifth year as starting quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens, Flacco is, for want of a better word, an enigma. Despite leading the Ravens to their fifth consecutive playoff appearance, Flacco is regarded as somewhat of an unspectacular performer who receives much undue criticism for not being in the “elite” bracket with Brady and co. It is remarkable really that the majority of the credit to Flacco”s 60-30 record, during which he has won at least one playoff game in each of his seasons, is attributed to the Ravens” excellent rushing attack and defensive coordination. A great defense and rushing game cannot compensate for an average QB (hello Jay Cutler), however, and Flacco”s 12 wins per season average trails only behind Peyton Manning (12.75) and the aforementioned Tom Brady ( 12.8) who both missed a season through injury.

While Flacco”s pass completion record has been fairly poor in this playoff run (54.8%), he has thrown 853 yards for 8 touchdowns and no interceptions. A very capable quarterback on a hot streak leading a team that is hitting a run of good form at the perfect time? Where have we heard that before? It could also be argued that he”s playing for a contract to establish himself as the face of the franchise which means tonight could be the perfect night for a Flacco favourite.

Ray Rice (Running Back):
Ray Rice

A crucial component of the Ravens” offense, the diminutive Ray Rice is arguably among the top running backs in the NFL. Under new offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell, Rice has averaged 94 rushing yards per game, and if he can reproduce The roulette en ligne wheel makes roulette en ligne arguably the most active and dynamic game on the casino floor. those numbers tonight against an efficient Niners” defense then that will go a long way to helping the Ravens overcome their opponents. One question surrounding Rice is whether or not he has addressed his fumbling issues when carrying the football. If he hasn”t, or the Niners can nullify his presence, then one expects that the Ravens will have a struggle on their hands.

Ray Lewis (Linebacker):
Ray Lewis

The only thing that can overshadow the Harbaugh Bowl is the Ray Lewis Factor. After 17 seasons, 13 pro bowls, a Superbowl ring and MVP, Ray Lewis will be playing his final game in the NFL on the biggest stage possible. Unquestionably, Lewis is the spiritual leader of the Ravens and his emotional presence is priceless to their defense despite his numbers falling short of what they used to be after the rigours of a lengthy career in the NFL and the injuries he carries. Lewis is a controversial figure but his stature on the field will be instrumental if the Ravens are to overcome the Niners tonight. Just don”t expect Lewis to be wearing a white suit during the victory parade.

Others to watch: Anquan Boldin, Torrey Smith, Ed Reed.

San Francisco:

Colin Kaepernick (Quarterback):

douchey kiss of the bicep. Who knew? Jim Harbaugh took a huge risk in dropping dependable quarterback Alex Smith for Kaepernick after Kaepernick”s demolition of the Bears on Monday Night Football, and neither Colin or Jim have looked back since. Kaepernick ran riot in the Divisional playoff, setting a QB rushing record of 181 yards as the Packers failed to compensate for his exceptional ground game. Meanwhile, the Falcons overcompensated against him which allowed Frank Gore more space to run and score in the Conference Championship. However, despite Kaepernicks exceptional performances, many commentators highlight the fact that the Superbowl will be only the tenth start of his fledgling career, in the biggest game of them all. Facing a secondary of Ed Reed and Bernard Pollard, to name a few, could this challenge be a game too soon for this bright prospect? We”ll soon find out tonight.

Vernon Davis (Tight End):
Vernon Davis

Whilst Kaepernick is stealing all the headlines, Vernon Davis at tight end is arguably still San Franciso”s most important offensive weapon despite a relatively quiet season. He demonstrated his impact ability against the Falcons with 5 catches for 106 yards and one touchdown. If the Baltimore D stack up against the Niners” offense than Davis could escape once again and be the go to guy to get points when they really matter.

Aldon Smith (Linebacker):
Aldon Smith

Undoubtedly a name frequenting discussions for Defensive Player of the Year, Smith has had a stellar season wreaking havoc on opposition offenses amassing a total of 19.5 sacks. This outside linebacker is a key figure in the Niners” defense and you would expect him to get to Flacco at least once tonight.

Others to watch: Frank Gore, Justin Smith, Patrick Willis

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Referee: Jerome Boger

National Anthem: Alicia Keys

Halftime Show: Beyoncé

Announcers: Jim Nantz and Phil Simms (CBS)

Buy plenty of snacks, gather your buddies, and sit back for one of the greatest spectacles in sports… or you can just tune in for the halftime show to see if Beyoncé lip syncs again.

UK viewers can watch Superbowl XLVII live tonight on BBC Two (23:00-04:00) or on Sky Sports 1 (22:30-04:00).

So this, our inspirablog (a conflation for “inspirational and educational running blog”) will act as a means to share our trials and tribulations, while also being a touchstone for keeping us fit, and making sure we are in the right direction. As such, it”s going to be an odd combination of advice, tips, experience, and other less traditional elements. For example, a regular feature will be “Hitch”s Mantra Of the Week”.

Hitch”s Mantra of the week: “Live with the body you want, not the body you have.

As well as this, we will have pictures, videos, and an ever growing playlist of music to run to which you are welcome to join in with. If you have enjoyed reading this make sure you follow us on twitter for various running based “banter” and if we get our act together we might think about setting up a charity page or something. This is Hitch, signing off! Niven Let Die The decision to start running was a pretty easy one to make. It was not a New Year’s resolution or based on the need to train for a half marathon or whatever. I just fancied giving being healthy a shot. Hitch and I had a conversation about it in early January and we have been running ever since. This blog will be here to give us a place to chat about our experiences and share our thoughts on running. First thought: sore legs. BBC Radio 6 Music Greatest

BBC 6 Music

BBC Radio 6 Music recently ran an open poll in which listeners were invited to vote for the station’s “greatest hit” from a shortlist of 100 tracks released over the past decade – since 6 Music’s conception back in 2002. Coldplay’s “Clocks” topped the official poll, leaving some tweeters a little disgruntled – and prompting some of us here at Nanu to consider what we would have done differently. The full list can be scrutinised here.

A Spotify playlist of our top choices, plus the three tracks mentioned most frequently, is available

What do you think should have topped the list? Leave us a comment and let us know your thoughts.

ELYSE JAMIESON

Seven Nation Army – The White Stripes

Emotionally, “Take Me Out” was the very clear turning point in my life, but on musical merit and innovation I feel that “Seven Nation Army” has to take the crown. Unfortunately for the purposes of this article, I can’t really pinpoint why. The thumping bass? The punchy drums? The scratching vocals? Perhaps it’s the fact that Meg and Jack generally make so much noise for two such small humans? Most likely it’s because it’s the epitome of “angular”, my favourite mid-2000s indie rock journo adjective. It’s still jerky, it’s still loud, and it’s still interesting.

2. Take Me Out – Franz Ferdinand
3. Hey Ya! – OutKast
4. Juicebox – The Strokes
5. Rehab – Amy Winehouse

RICHARD HANRAHAN

I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor – Arctic Monkeys

An impossibly good list of tracks. Trying to choose the best had to come down to recognition: not because they are the best tracks, but because the biggest hits grab you by the balls and neglect to let go until you are bruised and your heart beats to that tune. Or is that relationships? I forget. Anyway – I chose to treat this as if I were at the best indie club night, and there really was only one track that I cannot get enough of, and that was the Arctic Monkeys. Remember in the old days when they gave their album away – record labels didn”t sit up and pay attention until the fans demanded they were big, and now they are probably the most influential British pop outfit since the Beatles. Bold claim, but they are such a talented group of lads it isn”t undeserved. They inhabit the natural rut of brilliant British song-writing so charmingly that you cannot get sick of hearing what they have to say (however much DJs tried by overplaying this song – it still makes me want to dance). What”s more, they have a voice that isn”t usually heard, and tell a story in 3 minutes without a single lyric feeling out of place. Plus, in a club I like a song you can”t realistically kiss to, but which still makes you want to try. The perfect anthem for every rock and roll relationship that started in a dirty basement somewhere.

2. Such Great Heights – The Postal Service
3. Crazy – Gnarls Barkley
4. No One Knows – Queens of the Stone Age
5. Galvanize – The Chemical Brothers

ALEX GUSHURST-MOORE

Love You Better – The Maccabees

Despite being initially overwhelmed by the task of whittling down a somewhat selective list of 100 songs to five, the BBC have succeeded in choosing a collection that really resonates with moments from the past decade of my life (old as I am), and picking out the key moments wasn”t at all hard once I”d been swallowed up a little. So, following a dawdle down memory lane, I finally came up with the five songs that each defined a mood for me. I toyed with Metronomy as my top song, it having been slipped onto my iPod by my brother before I went to live abroad and then listened to on repeat for quite some time (before he could get his mucky paws on my music again). However, foremost in my mind as I sit in my shambolic university kitchen is my most recent foray into academia, coloured completely by the discovery of The Maccabees. Now I know they”ve been around for aeons, but bear with me in my middle age as I jump on the bandwagon just as it”s hurtling out of the station. This song strikes a chord in particular, and if you do pardon the sentiment, reminds me always to be the person that smiles the most, laughs the hardest, and loves the best: what a precious lesson to be reminded of as I begin adult life.

2. Heartbreaker – Metronomy
3. Welcome to Jamrock – Damian Marley
4. Tessellate – alt-J
5. No One Knows – Queens of the Stone Age

FINLAY NIVEN

Maps – Yeah Yeah Yeahs

If it wasn”t for Show Your Bones I may have never got into music the way I have. In 2006 I heard Maps for the first time and fell in love. I wanted more music like this and as luck would have it I was able to listen to the original Fever to Tell and brand new album Show Your Bones. Before this point in time I was only really interested in music that was released before I was born: David Bowie and The Beatles were on a pretty constant loop on my iPod. I pretty much ignored pop music being released at the time. The combination of the brilliant opening and strong vocals from Karen O make “Maps” very difficult to ignore. Though I didn”t think it at the time, it was by discovering the rest of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ material that then led me to seek out the other music that has shaped my taste since.

2. Such Great Heights – The Postal Service
3. Golden Skans – Klaxons
4. Fix Up, Look Sharp – Dizzee Rascal
5. Midnight City – M83

SAM BRADLEY

Mykonos – Fleet Foxes

Unlike the actual island – an idyllic destination in the Aegean Sea – “Mykonos” is not a favourite of the gay clubbing scene*. Instead, it”s one of Fleet Foxes” finest tracks – beautiful, delicate and hypnotic. With its gorgeous harmonies and folk rock melodies, it is perfectly representative of the band”s catalogue as a whole.

*Of course, there may be DJs on Mykonos that are massive Fleet Foxes.

2. Hometown Glory – Adele
3. Take Me Out – Franz Ferdinand
4. Sophia – Laura Marling
5. All My Life – Foo Fighters

ANGUS NIVEN

Such Great Heights – The Postal Service

This was super difficult. Narrowing down lists has always been something I struggle with, at its most conceptual level. This particular list really irked me: how can you reduce 100 of the greatest songs which you grew up with and categorically love to five and eventually choose one? Well I did it with difficulty and short lists (three to be precise: “Short List”, “Shorter List” and “Shortest List”). This brutal, wine-soaked process lead to the list you see and “Such Great Heights” on top. I love this track. I listen to it every time I get a new pair of headphones with all the boopa doopa and whatnot. The track has remained high on my agenda of things I want my ears to hear on a regular basis and so it tops this list which I previously thought to be insurmountable. The rest of the tracks are good, great even, but “Such Great Heights” is incrementally better due to the aforementioned boopa doopas and headphone commitments.

a small fixation with Wall-E, and hold many of its peers in high esteem – few higher than one of my all time favourite films “Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs”. As such, when it comes to animation, I have been around the block. Having only recently caught Paranorman I am happy to say that this surpassed whatever few expectations I had of this. What was a release that slipped past me last year as some loveless film for kids has become my surprise kids film of the year – filling the void left by my disappointed expectations of Brave.

Paranorman echoes much of the knowing humour of CWACOM, and similarly manges to balance it with a cracking, easy to watch masterpiece that kids will enjoy too. The story of Paranorman subverts the traditional children”s narrative while keeping thoughts critical. A child, Norman, is born in a world in which he does not fit. He is peculiar in his difference, and finds that his difference makes him special, but struggles to really his individuality into something positive.

The subversion comes in that his gift is that he can see dead people, sharing a peculiar skill that only his Uncle – a reclusive oddity that is shunned by the rest of the town – dares mention, and in a town built on a history of ghosts and witchcraft. Believing

him to be deluded, his family hope he will break from his phase, and fail to see the truth that was staring at them all along – just how special he is.

The look of Paranorman is magical – managing to capture something of the ghostly quality of stop motion animation into an aesthetic that looks clean, and crisp – and is put to good use in a distinctive online casinos australia world. Filled with humour, Paranorman manages to amuse horror fans while keeping Kids interested with a tale that is just as dark as they could hope to cope with, while never overstepping or abusing its position. A very intelligent, funny and beautiful film that I would be happy for my kids to fall in love with.

Oscar Hopes

There is only one nomination and that is for Best Animated Feature, alongside Brave, Frankenweenie, Wreck-it Ralph and Aardman”s Pirates!, a collection of films which all have their charms. The category is such an oddity that it seems hard to try to rationalise how any decision can be made – are we looking here for animation and style, or should we be focusing on the best film which happens to be animated? The look and feel of Paranorman is so utterly distinctive that comparison seems impossible, but it certainly surpasses the almost clumsy Pixar offering of Brave, and Burton”s Frankenweenie unfortunately lags behind Paranorman while attempting to do something similar, but with a more tired invention. Wreck-it Ralph, still technically unreleased in Britain, promises to be as equally well written and different which means it may be the biggest competitor, if judged with this kind of criteria – in fact, both attend to fans of different cultures – Wreck-it Ralph indulging the fantasies of avid arcade gamers, while Paranorman is soaked in reference to trashy horror films and other low-art films, it might be worth considering which offends the Academies” sentiments the most! As it is, I would personally love to see Paranorman win, but almost all of the films in this category are equally deserving but for different reasons – but are unfortunately inseparable offerings due to their diversity (bizarre as that sounds). Potentially a very difficult category to predict.
