Five Reasons to Watch Parks and Recreation

image

Today I have inhaled Parks and Recreation, a sitcom I not so wittily described as a breath of fresh air. Because they work in Parks, where fresh air abound! I’m an idiot but this shouldn’t stop you from watching and enjoying Parks and rec

Parks and Recreation is currently airing on BBC4, a terrific sitcom that all but passed me by when it was released. Luckily I set it to record last time I was home and so had a marathon ready for me when I returned from Uni for Easter. I wont bore you with a synopsis of the show, because it is based on the lives of bureaucrats in a tiny town and telling you this likely achieves the opposite of my goal (making you watch this show). There are dozens of reasons you should watch it, so guess what I did? I made a list of five of them.

Reasons you should watch Parks and Recreation (with clips)

Leslie Knope

Amy Poehler graduated from the same era of SNL as Tina Fey and Kirsten Whigg, Leslie Knope (and the show in general) represents both her first step beyond SNL. I would argue that Parks is also her best work to date (not including Baby Mama)

N.B. hey look its Louie C.K!

Ron Swanson

Ron Swanson’s Office

I was also going to include “Ron Swanson’s Moustache” but I felt the point was implied with the other clips. the point being that he has a glorious moustache

Funny Women

Parks and Recreation is also useful as a font of endless clips settling the popular women aren’t  funny ‘debate’.

ROB LOWE

Rob Lowe as at least three of you know was in the West Wing and remains my favourite member of the Brat Pack. He (according to the internet/his twitter) enters the Second Season near the end and remains. So why wouldn’t you watch this show? If you’re a fan of the West Wing, his last big political role, why wouldn’t you want more of this?

If the possibility of more of that is not something that gets you watching this show chances are you are not me and that’s fine but you should still watch the show.

I know this is a lazy article, but give me a break I’m only just back and to be honest I’ve been pretty busy watching Parks and Recreation. Really I’m doing you a favour, because now you will probably watch this show 4 years late and your world will be a marginally better place

I really love this theme as well, I have a very “MC Hammer” dance for it which I will show you if you buy me a beer or ask super nicely

Event: Science Festival Lates

Science Festival Lates_574da9

I scoured the Internet, I scoured the streets. I scoured other things as well, I scoured them for an event for you lovely ladies and gents and I found one. I found you an even when I left a toilet (gents) in EUSA’s very own union. I left the toilet and met some very persuasive and helpful folk who worked the door for the Edinburgh International Science Festival. There was stand-up on tonight (3 April) and as at least one of you know I like stand-up and Science. The festival runs from the 23 March until the 7th of April so you have 4 days left to soak up the rather impressive line-up of sciencey enterfunment. Today you have “The Fame Algorithm With Simon Pampena” a stand-up Mathematician in Teviot Row underground  (Thurs 4th April£10/£8) If combining any nerdy topic, beer and hilarity isn’t your thing well you aren’t me. But if they are your thing or you are me well you should go.

Why Angus Niven is not voting for Mitt Romney

Romney

This has been an ugly election, interesting, but ugly. Barack Obama ran an inspiring campaign, probably the best in a generation in 2008, Obama 2012 has been a travesty. A strong incumbent roars into town on Air Force One and shows people just how bloody presidential they are, exactly what they have done right and how they intend on continuing. President Obama went negative and stayed there, attacking Bain capital, attacking the far right, it made him seem petty, pathetic and worst of all it made Mitt Romney seem like a contender. Despite the Republican parties best efforts (remember Herman Cain?) Mitt Romney eventually got the nod. Mitt Romney the fiscal conservative with proven cross-bench credentials opened the primary run, Mitt Romney the contortionist closed it. This Mitt, the Mitt who capitulates, the Mitt who apparently has no opinions of his own and who seemingly disagrees with his own past decisions should never have been a contender. Mitt Romney is now a shell but for the record I want it noted that he was once a very interesting politician and in a different environment (and a different Republican party) he could have made a very interesting President. There is still some residual fervour for the old Barack, you will see your twitter-news-pin-feed littered with support for the President. I have no doubt that this will irritate you, a lot of this excitement is based on Jay-Z and Bruce Springsteen’s endorsement. Barack Obama is still cool, but is he the right candidate? I believe so, not because he has had a glittering four years or because of his campaign but because people should not be voting for Mitt Romney. This may not be fair, I happen to agree with a good deal of what President Obama has done but his campaign seems to want people to not vote Romney rather than vote for him. Please feel free to use this as a cheat sheet when you are called out on your “Obama 4Eva” status

Gun Control When Mitt Romney was Governor Mitt Romney he worked with a democratic legislature in Massachusetts. During this time Mitt passed a ban on assault rifles, the fact that assault rifles weren't already banned is an issue for another articles, at the time the New Yorker quotes him as saying “Deadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts,” “These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.” Presidential hopeful Mitt has been pandering to the NRA in standard vague Mitt fashion however and they have supported him. So I think we can assume that he has changed his mind and there will be very little movement on Americas embarrassing gun control Laws under a President Mitt

Health Once again a great example of Governor Mitt Romney being a strong politician, Romney passed a healthcare act that in many quarters has been described as the blueprint for the act eventually passed by Obama. “ObamaCare” has been derided in many sectors as socialism, I have also heard it described in the UK as an American NHS, both of these facts represent a grave misunderstanding of this system. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) is not a healthcare system as such, PPACA is a mechanism which will increase private insurance coverage. Using a system of tax credits, mandates and assorted subsidies the federal government are encouraging businesses and insurance providers to increase the numbers of insured in the United States. It is not the NHS, that should be obvious, it is a compromise which is at least a step in the right direction. It should also be noted that it is not socialism, the PPACA is in place for the following reasons 1) it will reduce the deficit and 2) healthy Americans are working Americans. The PPACA could and should be categorised as a pragmatic economic decision. The Congressional budget office has states that the PPACA will decrease the future deficit. According to the economist’s World in Figures the UK spends 9.6% of GDP on healthcare compared to the United States 17.9%. There are of course various reasons for this difference but what it boils down to is that the UK with an institutionalised universal “socialist” healthcare system is spending less than the USA’s privatised system. Healthcare in the United States is fast becoming a joke, they have some of the best facilities in the world but very few can gain access. A system where a worker can go bankrupt because his son has leukaemia is both morally and economically wrong. Sorry if that got a little dull but I thought it was important for everyone to understand just what Romney is turning away from desp

ite its obvious benefits and his past with it. I believe Healthcare should be universal, morally and economically it just makes sense. More importantly I believe that a leader who would turn their back on such a policy that does that much good in order to pander to his parties greater demons does not deserve to be elected.

Foreign Affairs Remember when Mitt Romney left America for a while in August? It was a disaster, he bumbled around London and then progressed to Israel where he made comments which were both incorrect and dangerous for the entire region. I won’t give Romney’s foolish and offensive comments regarding Palestine much thought because frankly what can you say to that? Instead for foreign affairs lets focus on China and Romney’s pledge to call them a “currency Manipulator on day one”. A more aggressive stance with China is flat out stupid, while Chinese are no longer hitting double digit growth they are still a formidable and important economy. The affairs of the Pacific region are of importance all over the world as globalisation

increases economic exposure. Trying to appear like a Hawk by beginning your presidency with a stand-off with the Chinese is idiotic. Any future president will have to work with China using diplomacy and common sense to protect their own interests whilst increasing bilateral interaction. Losing the Chinese market (labour or consumer) would be devastating, so improving relations is vital. Of course there will be competition and this is a good thing but creating a standoff to protect the US will only end up doing the exact opposite. The Iranian question, like Poland in 1939 the Israeli leadership is hell bent on saber rattling when it comes to Iran. Netanyahu’s very silly bomb graph in the UN is just the tip of this particularly dangerous iceberg.

Any president who comes into office will have to tread lightly. Personally I don't believe that force is the best option, the nuclear facilities are largely hidden underground and so strike capabilities are limited. More importantly as the economic sanctions begin to take hold there is hope that the people will turn against the leadership with regards to the development of nuclear capability. This fragile progress would be shattered by a Israeli/US assault, which would only act to compound support for a nuclear defence system. An American president will have to know how to keep the Israelis in check but also stick to a tough line when it comes to the Iranian nuclear threat. Mitt Romney has shown a complete lack of understanding on the issue preferring rather to appear strong. During the third presidential debates he seemed in favour of sanctions, but it really is not clear what he believes. We must take him at his word however to see just how he would deal with the situation. Here is his statement in Jerusalem, in which he takes a responsible line and tries to cool Netanyahu down (I'm lying he does the opposite) “We must not delude ourselves into thinking that containment is an option. We must lead the effort to prevent Iran from building and possessing nuclear weapons capability. We should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course, and it is our fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so. In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded. We recognize Israel’s right to defend itself, and that it is right for America to stand with you.”

In Summary here are the reasons I am not voting for Mitt Romney

  • He is going back on his good gun control/healthcare record seemingly to pander for funding and support.
  • His stance on foreign policy is backwards and thoughtlessly aggressive
  • Mitt Romney is so busy trying to get elected contorting himself trying to be an every-man. Honestly at this stage I don't think even he knows what would happen when he got there.
  • Finally and I can’t stress this one enough I am British and therefore don’t legally have a vote in the United States.

Don't look in there! The state of Scary Movies

Scary

Angus Niven doesn”t scare easy, this is a lie. I scare easier than something that scares easy. Even so I struggle to get myself scared at the current “horror” section of my local Blockbuster. Scary films are on the most part lame-zo snorefests. Saw I-IIV are testament to the guff churned out, much like American Pie 3 through 26, Saw shows cinematic formula”s are exploitable. Lots o gore, a couple of pale English school girls and perhaps an unsuspecting cheerleader with unsupported boobies. Look at that I just wrote a horror film.

Renowned pedophile Roman Polanski riled against this formula with Rosemary”s Baby (1968). This was over 4 decades ago, Polanski”s psychotic Mia Farrow terrified but did so intelligently. We have seen many examples of smart thrilling horror since then but also a suffocating barrage of sewage.

I scare easy but what is scary about watching a couple in an empty house? Doors open and close and you rightly shit yourself, but thats when you are home alone not when you are watching a couple of muppets with an scarily incompetent cameraman. The focus on bums leaving seats has lead to me jumping out of mine to change the channel (I don”t have a remote in this scenario). Despite moments of genius, horror is a genre in free fall. Not unlike Keanu Reaves we are expected to accept Horror on the back of a few good films despite an overwhelming majority of nonsense. Why is that? Why aren”t more filmmakers trying harder? Why was there three Matrix and only one Point Break?

I can”t help but wonder what if horror wasn”t deemed a genre? What if filmmakers were forced to draw more out of 90 minutes than a few scares? Horror films, or at least the good ones, provide good scares but a little more.

Take zombies, a horror staple since Mr Romero showed the world how it was done. Of course they are scary, but they are only scary when used properly. As shown in the sensational 28 Days Later (2002) where Zombies are used for some truly thrilling action sequences and more importantly engaging character development. Using the horror and scares to build characters and tell a story of humanity is something we could use more of. If the scares aren”t the focus would this make a difference? I think 28 Days Later proves that taking the focus of seat jumping leads to much more worthwhile cinema. Sadly it is apparent that few filmmakers took this lesson on board

Personally the scariest film I have ever seen is Fatal Attraction (1987). It may not have kept me up at night like It (1966) but good grief Charlie Brown is it scary. Fatal attraction is a slow psychological thriller, from mundane beginnings director Adrian Lyne presents a very realistic and terrifying descent into complete insanity. Glen Close is phenomenal, her monstrously believable depiction of a regular person”s descent is terrifying. It is the lack of mysticism and magic and the embrace of simple horrifying humanity that makes Fatal Attraction so scary for me. Even the hint of the unexplained in Rosemary”s Baby can remove you, Fatal Attraction is nothing but humanity and there is nowhere to turn for comfort.

Yet you probably won”t find Fatal Attraction under horror, why not? It”s a good deal scarier than Saw or Paranormal Activity. It is an engaging and terrifying film, the fact that it wouldn”t be described as “Horror” says more about the state of the genre than enthusiasts are willing to admit.

So this Halloween when you are deciding on what scary film you should watch let your mind wander. Don”t neccesarily accept what the suits in Hollyweird classify as Horror, find something that engages you as much as it terrifies. Find a film that scares you the more you think about it. More importantly remember to stay prepared for some personal character growth, you never know there might be a zombie apocalypse tomorrow.

Nanu on Bond: Bond on Booze

Bond-on-Booze

Alcohol is unbelievably prevalent across the books and films of James Bond. James has invented a drink, drinks champagne like water and if that weren’t enough his catchphrase is his Martini order.   The Vesper Martini   Invented by James in “Casino Royale” ‘A dry Martini,’ he said. ‘One. In a deep champagne goblet.’ ‘Oui, Monsieur.’ ‘Just a moment. Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large slice of lemon-peel. Got it?’   Martini Shaken not Stirred   Bartlet: ‘Shaken, not stirred, will get you cold water with a dash of gin and dry vermouth. The reason you stir it with a special spoon is so not to chip the ice. James is ordering a weak martini and being snooty about it.’ Normally President Josiah Bartlet’s word is law. End of story, this time I’m not too sure. There has been an awful lot

of research into the topic, too much I would think. Take “Shaken, not stirred: bio-analytical study of the antioxidant activities of martinis” apparently 0.072% of peroxide control for shaken martini, 0.157% for stirred v 58.3% for gin and 1.90% for vermouth this may or may not explain Cdr. Bond’s lack of cataracts. Genuinely this is a thing. So why shaken not stirred? What it boils down to is Ian Fleming drank his martini this way. There is a question of the gin bruising in the shaker, what this means for flavour I don’t know. Ian Fleming reportedly drank a bottle of Gin a day though so why don’t we trust his judgement? He had more practice drinking Gin than us, maybe a bruised Gin Martini is a tasty Martini. When it comes to a Vodka

Martini shaken seems to to reduce oiliness, I know I wouldn’t want an oily martini, it also helps to make the Vodka Martini ice cold which is nice. Also its an awesome line.   Vodka Martini (Shaken, Not Stirred)   1 1/2 oz vodka 3/4 oz dry vermouth Shake vodka and vermouth together with several ice cubes in a shaker. Shake until it’s ice cold and garnish with lemon peel   Gin Martini (Shaken, Not Stirred)   2 oz dry gin 1 oz dry vermouth Shake well and garnish with

lemon peel   Eggs Bond Style Now once you have polished this lot off, why not prepare 007’s scrambled eggs for yourself and your lady guest the next morning? As written in Ian Flemings short story “Agent 007 in New York”   For FOUR individualists: 12 fresh eggs Salt and pepper 5-6 oz. of fresh butter   Break the eggs into a bowl. Beat thoroughly with a fork and season well. In a small copper (or heavy-bottomed saucepan) melt four oz. of the butter. When melted, pour in the eggs and cook over a very low heat, whisking continuously with a small egg whisk. While the eggs are slightly more moist than you would wish for eating, remove pan from heat, add rest of butter and continue whisking for half a minute, adding the while finely chopped chives or fines herbes. Serve on hot buttered toast in individual copper dishes (for appearance only) with pink champagne (Taittainger) and low music.

Nanu on Bond: Angus on Thunderball

Thunderball_Logo

Thunderball is the first Bond book I read. True fact.
Thunderball sees James face off against Spectre, chiefly the eyepatched menace “No. 2”. Everything is present; an Aston Martin, excellent quips and enemies who straddle perfectly the line between camp and menacing. Also present is some really great second unit action sequences, especially the underwater fights. While often criticised as slow I’ve always been a big fan. Now lets talk about the real star of this picture, the set piece that really stands out. Probably the main reason that the Academy awarded Thunderball the 1966 Oscar for visual effects, The Mink Glove. James uses a Mink mitten to bring a health worker to ecstasy, like

total mind melting ecstasy. She goes completely mad for it, its like she’s never come into contact with hair or mittens before. Truly a groundbreaking prop.
Oh and also James flys a jetpack. The mink glove though, man thats where it is at.

Nanu on Bond: Bond Girls

james_bond_women_01

Chicks man can you dig it? James bond can dig it he can dig it hard. Not with a shovel or anything that would be creepy, although sometimes with a shovel. I mean how many of these girls survive?

As we return from a disturbing tangential trail we turn to Bond Girls. This is the first topic in our week long discussion of all things Bond. The Girl is so vitally important in every Bond film, regularly the plot pivots on that one vital post-coital fist fight. Ask someone old about Dr. No (1962), ask your Dad.

Done? did you get grossed out by his response regarding Ursula Andress on the beach, that is how men remember that film. No offence to Connery Dr. No marked an excellent performance by him but Andress coming out of the water? That’s where it is, soul brother. The most famous moments throughout Bonds history arguably revolve around a women Jill Masterson dipped in gold in Goldfinger (1964) the excellent motorbike chase through Hong Kong in The World is Not Enough (1999) and Pussy Galores name in Goldfinger.

These are a few examples off the top of my head, there are so many more. The sheer quantity of Bond girls or women is staggering in a 2009 survey it was found that in the first 20 Bond films James had “strong” sexual encounters with 46 women and “mild” encounters with a further 52. This is only slightly more muted in the books where Fleming was often criticized for his inclusion of so much sex and violence. His rebuttal in this desert island discs is pretty convincing (link) If you don’t want to listen to the whole thing basically he says the whole of history is sex and violence why shouldnt they be included in his books? A sensible point. Fleming also states that there is around one girl a book and one book a year, James is a bachelor and this is entirely reasonable.

Now enough maths and justification, lets get down to business “Angus Niven’s Favourite Bond Girls”

My is think either buy viagra one will salicylic cialis india and the The generic viagra way hydrogenated better far – ed medications doesn’t stores bad. now this isn’t “nuts” I wont be judging them on looks, instead I have based my decision using a meticulous methodology factoring in performance effect on the plot but mostly focusing on double entendre… Begin!

Xenia Onatopp

Disappointing name right? you were hoping for Mary Loves-Cock or something. Don’t worry she’s coming, Xenia was the first Bond girl in my life (Goldeneye, 1995) so she is first on this list. Lets get down to business, Xenia “derives sexual satisfaction from killing”. I could leave the article there, ludicrous. Xenia kills several people in flagrante, just wraps her pythonic thighs around them and crushes them to death. As far as I know she is the only mid-coital fist fight James undertakes, totally bonkers but completely incredible, also “Xenia Onatopp” isn’t a terrible pun.

Hey look its Xenia Onatopp, on top! Good clean fun (until she sexes you to death)

Plenty O’Toole

Read the name again.

Outrageous, utterly beyond rageous. 1971 was a strange time, probably. Ms O’Toole starred in Diamonds are Forever, James meets her at a casino or something, at one point she is thrown from a hotel room window. Really it doesn’t matter. Just look at her name

Dr Holly Goodhead

From an early age we are told that “the old Bonds are the best, apart from Moonraker. Moonraker is crap” This is largely true, Moonraker is a calamity, everything is wrong the sci-fi, Bond’s performance, the script. Everything but Dr Holly Goodhead’s name, its just fabulous. She may be a humble “space scientist” but she captured my heart and mind.

Pussy Galore

Pussy Galore is arguably the quintessential Bond Girl. Hilarious name? Check. Leader of an all women pilot squadron? Check. Raped by James Bond? Check. Seriously go back and watch the scene on the hay, its pretty much full on sexual assault. Other than that Galore is a consistently good Bond girl, name alone gets her up there but elite all women fighter squadron that really sends it home.

Monneypenny

What? Monneypenny? I know many would argue she doesn’t fit the remit. Well those people are liars and idiots Monneypenny is the ultimate Bond girl she is a constant source of sexual tension and double entendres. Monneypenny is a fixture in the Bond universe, I feel adrift if she isnt there always ready with some truely filthy turn of phrase or gaze so infused sexually charged it buckles the knees. Genuinely some of the franchises finest lines come from Moneypenny for example when she interrupts James in bed with a Danish language professor “Oh James you always were a cunning linguist”. Thats gold, I cant top that. How do you talk about a line like that, it is simply majestic

Fun fact: James cant look at a women like that for more than 2 minutes, due to the risk of impregnation

Honorary mention goes to “Dr Christmas Jones” Denise Richards character from “The World is Not Enough”. A perfectly average Bond girl, there was no way she was making the list. However she deserves a mention for being the protagonist of one of my favourite lines. I will close this article with it, because frankly if its good enough to close The World is not enough its good enough for this article

James Bond: [in bed with Jones] I was wrong about you.

Dr. Christmas Jones: Yeah, how so?

James Bond: I thought Christmas only comes once a year.

[NB I have been informed that perhaps it should be “Bond Women”. I agree that none of these characters are underage, or at least I hope to god they’re not. I just don’t think that referring to them as “Bond Girls” diminishes them in anyway. If you are offended by me and everyone else referring to them as “Bond Girls” leave a comment I’d love to discuss this and find out why.]

Joseph Gordon-Levitt? more like Joseph Gordon Love-It.

joseph-gordon-levitt-2

On Sunday the 30th of September 2012 a theft took place. A crime so heinous it has taken me until now (5 days later) to speak of it. It started, as it always does, with a dame…

Dame Judy Dench was informing James Bond that his 00 status was to be revoked, he had been tortured by Madonna’s theme tune in North Korea and they believe he had gone rogue. It was around this time that I thought, “no, no sir. A man can only be pushed so far” and so I resolutely switched off “Die Another Day” and turned over to “10 things I hate about you”. I’m quite sure you will agree that it was a damned good choice, what’s not to love? Heath Ledger is both funny and charming and Julia Styles looks like a ghost. This has long been a favourite of mine, chiefly because there is an impromptu musical number, but also because it is one of the best high school comedies emerging from the 1990’s.

This film is often overlooked, for example on this very website’s “Back to School: movies” article [full disclosure I wrote and take full responsibility for this viscous oversight]. In what was becoming a frankly cruel streak in my character, I had also completely disregarded Joseph Gordon Levitt’s performance in the past. In fact I was surprised he was even in the film, whilst I

watched him take on the Shakespearean task of trying to bone Julia Styles sister I decided to make a list.

Fans of lists will no doubt be excited by this decision; the list in question is Joseph Gordon Levitt’s finest films. The problem I had however is this; JGL’s films have also been some of the highest grossing of the last 5 years. This means that any list is pretty irrelevant as the majority of people have seen them or heard about them and chosen not to see them. There are very few Gordon-Levitt pictures that I can recommend which would make this article even vaguely practical.

I spent this mild September afternoon dealing with the quandary of digging a relevant piece out of a) a thoroughly overused article structure and b) an actor whose filmography is pretty widely known. As I dealt with these issues and began composing my list, the thieves struck.

Horrifying I”m sure you agree, to see such a graphic scene of crimes against my own brand of mediocre pseudo-journalism. I struggled to come to terms with it myself, somehow the Huffington Post had managed to steal my article before I had even written it. How they did it? I may never know. How it made me feel? I know only too well. Not that its any real consolation after the grievous violation of my mental privacy that occurred but here is my list of Joseph Gordon-Levitts best films;

1) Beethoven (1990)

What? Beethoven? I know, I know we were all thinking it. Obviously he’s one of the kids or something. Nope a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt began his career as “Student 1”. Many will try to argue he really started his career with the excellent 1990’s sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. Those people are liars and you shouldn”t listen to them, Beethoven is a great family film which I fondly remember and so am frankly reluctant to rewatch in case it’s a total stinker. If a cuddlier John Hughes film exists, ill eat my hat. The only possible flaw in it is the minimal Gordon Levitt time.

2) 10 Things I hate about you (1999)

I have already talked about this film, and it really is excellent. Of the two late 90’s modern
day adaptations of Shakespeare (the other being Baz Lurman’s Romeo and Juliet) 10 Things is the sillier but this doesn”t diminish the film in any way. 3) [500] Days of Summer (2009)

Looking back now at this totes-indie flick we might find it somewhat cringe worthy. However in those heady days of 2009 it really was a stand out film. Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon Levitt react so well off each other and frankly the non-linear structure blew our small ‘09 minds (a simpler time). It’s easy to make fun of the maniacal love of the Smiths and Deschanel”s many totes-indie quirks but at its heart this is a very strong and surprisingly funny film. To be fair the Smiths are also a pretty OK band.

[Levitt probably listening to “The Smiths” in [500] Days of Summer, in case you didn”t know what he looks like]

4) Inception (2010)

Like a circle within a circle, or a wheel within a wheel. Inception is one of the major blockbusters of our generation. This is heartening because it is also one of a new Nolan inspired bread of blockbusters that assumes you aren”t a total imbecile. While the usual idiot fodder like “Avatar” is still churned out, Inception proved to studio bosses that a film with substance can really make some money. Stand out moments in Inception for me (and probably everyone else) is Gordon Levitt’s gravity defying fight scene in the hotel room corridor and when Tom Hardy said and did things.

5) The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

Hooray more Nolan/JGL/Tom Hardy, only this time its longer, fatter and you cant hear Tom Hardy. I appreciate there are a lot of Dark Knight Rises fans out there and frankly I am with you. In a vacuum it’s a sickeningly good blockbuster, held up against Begins and the Dark Knight? Its flabby, long winded and frankly a bit crap. The fight scenes are nowhere near as good as I had hoped, the plot was somewhat see through and the weird fascist overtones were just too evident. I know I am being a nit picking twat when I moan about the disappearing stab wounds and magically reappearing batmen. It is a strong blockbuster and that is why it is on this list, I liked it but it was long and not as good as the other two. More importantly to this article Gordon-Levitt wasn’t in the preceding films and he was brilliant in Dark Knight Rises.

[NB “Joseph Gordon-Loved It”was (to my knowledge) originally used by Rob Delaney. An American comic who you should already be following on twitter @Robdelaney.

Also if fans out there arent already using JGL as shorthand, you are welcome]
